Lokad 01 - Unearthed

The pursuit of music has become so effortless. We don’t have to move from our seat to seek it out. We are guided by complex algorithms that serve us what it decides we love to consume. Search artists or genre; get suggested artists. Evaluate whether to take the time to listen based on the artists suggested, the number of track plays, comments or likes or if our friends listen to it. We get led from one playlist to another all by the machine we are using.

We have asked ourselves; what have we lost in our discovery of music because there is very little that doesn’t carry so much data along with it?

Unearthed is the first of a series of limited edition vinyl only releases by Lokad motivated by this question. 300 records will be pressed. No digital release. No represses.

These compilations are designed to re-imagine what is possible when the tracks are completely anonymous (under artist alias) and the selection is unexpected and curated by theme rather than genre. The theme of this first release is Unearthed.

LOKAD 01- Unearthed

Artists have been selected meticulously and even they don’t know who else has contributed to the compilation. Each release features tracks by legendary artists, up and coming rising stars and completely unknown creators. If we told you who the artists were (we won’t) you would be impressed. All artists have contributed one track to the release by invitation only and have chosen a new unknown alias.

We asked our artists to unearth something for us. Maybe it is a track they still thought about and that they didn’t release when it was made over 15 years ago. A track that was inspired by an emotion or experience being brought into the light. We gave them the theme and they had the freedom to choose the track based on their interpretation of the theme.

Lokad is an independent electronic dance music label out of San Francisco, CA. It is a project of Whitney Smith, Co-Owner of RS94109.
